Teams can register as early as July 17, 2007, when the 2007-2008 program is officially launched. The registration deadline is September 18, the official start date of the program. This is the last day that a team can be registered to participate in the program.

You can login and use our edit form to update your number of team members or your address if either of these have changed since you registered. It is important to keep both accurate for when prizes and incentives will be sent out. Keeping your email address accurate is extremely important to receive regular updates and important information from SNA.

Only SNA members can be a team leader. Please find an SNA member who is willing to be the point of contact and the team leader for SNA. You can work with this person to jointly motivate team members and track points if you wish. Alternatively, you can become an SNA member by joining at www.schoolnutrition.org and experience the many benefits that SNA has to offer.

This program is designed to promote personal wellness among individual participants and teams at the school level. We encourage you to find other SNA members at your school who are interested in forming a team with you. If you have a very small school or no other SNA members at your school are interested, you may wish to join another team within your district.
SNA recommends that teams have more than one person. Teams must have 2 or more members in order to be eligible for final prizes. This program emphasizes meeting personal goals as well as team goals. Social support is important to success when making changes in nutrition and physical activity behaviors. It is okay to join a team at another school in your district if you are unable to form a team at your school. If you really would like to participate in the program as an individual, you may do so. However, you will not be eligible for final prizes.
There is no limit to the number of people on your team. However, there can only be one team per school and one Team Leader per team. Teams that are larger than 20 people may be difficult to manage, so SNA recommends that teams be between 2 and 20 people.
If your school is very small or if there are no other SNA members in your school, this would be a great opportunity to encourage teachers or other staff in your school to participate on your team.. You may also wish to simply join another school’s team. Alternatively, you may need to form a team with other SNA members in your district. In this case, choose a team leader at the district level and register one team for the entire district. Choose one school name from your district to indicate on the registration form.

SNA members that do not work in a central office or central kitchen can still participate in the program by joining a school or district team. Points earned by those members can be included in the team total. Prizes for the team will be awarded to the school or district as applicable. Alternatively, a team can be formed at the central office or central kitchen in addition to other school-based teams in your district. However, an individual school must be designated on the team registration form so that the milk merchandiser can be awarded to a school should the team win.
Any SNA member may be a team leader as long as the team is identified as belonging to a school and district. The prizes will be awarded only to schools and districts.

Teams can be formed at the state agency. This can be an effective way to motivate schools in your state to participate in the program. However, a school and school district do still need to be identified on the registration form so the final milk merchandiser can be awarded to a school should the team win. The points earned by the team would be credited to the district identified for consideration for the overall winning district.
Any SNA member may be a team leader as long as the team is identified as belonging to a school and district. The prizes will be awarded only to schools and districts.

If you would like to form a team and participate in the program, but are not able to receive the incentives due to an ethics conflict, please just let SNA know at snf@schoolnutrition.org and we can remove your team from the mailing list for incentives. The monetary value of incentives per person is $10.

Non SNA members can participate with you and use all of the program resources and goals, however, they can not be Team Leaders because an SNA username and password are required for team registration.

New members can join a registered team at any time. When a new team member is added to a registered team, the team leader will include that person’s points in the team total and adjust the total number of team members accordingly.
The member’s points for previous weeks will still apply toward your team totals. After the team member stops participating, the team leader will not include the member’s points in the team totals for future weeks, and will adjust the number of team members for reporting. Team members that are no longer participating will not receive incentives or be eligible for final prizes. The incentives will be sent to the team leader based on the number of active team members indicated in the final reporting entry at the end of each phase.

SNA recommends that teams include no more than 20 members for ease of managing the team. If you choose to create a team for the entire district, please be mindful that large teams may be difficult to manage. Also, districts must have three participating teams in order to be eligible for the overall district prize. If your district chooses to have just one team, you will not be eligible for the $5,000 prize. As an option, you may wish to designate three Team Leaders to manage three separate teams then divide team members as you wish. Please just be sure to identify a school name and the district for each team so that the milk merchandiser can be awarded to a school should a team win.

It is possible to get more than 2000 points during the course of the program. Exceeding 2000 points doesn’t guarantee you are a winner, however, the extra points will help your teams overall average. The final prizes will be awarded to teams with the most averaged points overall. If your team reaches 2000 points early, congratulate yourself and your team members and keep working to earn more points. Not only do you add to your teams total points, each member adds to their individual improvement towards personal wellness.

The goals for each phase are realistic goals for each team to reach. It is possible for a team to get more points than the goal for each phase. If your team reaches the goal early, congratulate yourself and your team members and keep working to earn more points. The final prizes will be awarded to teams with the most averaged points overall. Exceeding the goal for each phase will not only help your team win, but will also help all team members improve personal wellness.

A team member can get up to 3 individual bonus points per day for the first phase (1 for dairy and 2 for activity). The dairy bonus can only be used in the first phase and the activity bonus can only be used in the first and second phase. Only one activity point is available in the second phase. A team can get up to 30 "healthy meeting" bonus points per phase (10 bonus points for each healthy meeting hosted or catered by the team). The "healthy meeting" bonus points remain the same throughout all three phases. As additional bonus points are added throughout the program, individuals can earn up to 20 additional bonus points per week during Phase 3. Additional team bonus points added during Phase 1 will enable teams to get up to 10 team bonus points per week.

The criteria for a "healthy meeting" is posted in the Downloadable Materials section and you can find other available resources in the Helpful Resources section of the Eat Smart, Get Moving!

An active team member is someone who participates and submits points every week consistently. If a team member opts out of the program, their previous points are still valid toward the team goal, and the team leader should adjust their total number of team members the next time they report their progress. Those team members who choose to opt out will not be eligible for further prizes and incentives.

The target goal for each team is to reach a minimum of 2000 points. This corresponds to the approximate distance from LA to Chicago (2000 miles). However, final prizes will be awarded to the teams with the most points averaged per team overall. All teams that reach 2000 points should be extremely proud of their progress and will benefit personally and as a team from the positive changes they have made in nutrition and physical activity behaviors. However, all teams that reach 2000 points will not win a final prize.

SNA received feedback from participating teams last year that it is more difficult to reach the team goal when all team members points need to be averaged if all team members are not meeting goals. SNA would like to encourage all SNA members to work toward personal wellness, and we hope that those who need to make a lot progress on the goals than the “star” team members are not discouraged from participating. We felt that organizing final prizes by team size would make all teams feel that they were participating on a level playing field.

The overall winning district is determined by averaging together the scores of all participating teams in the district. Please note that teams must have at least 3 participating schools (with 2 or more team members per team) to be eligible for the overall winning district prize.

SNA will periodically send updates on where the leading teams are on the program route by email. Information on the leading teams’ progress will also be available periodically on the homepage. SNA anticipates that these updates will be available a minimum of once per phase.

Unfortunately, there must be three schools in a district to win the overall district prize. Your team will still be eligible to win the other prizes according to the size of your team.

The School Nutrition Association’s Annual National Conference (ANC) takes place each year in July at different cities across the United States. Eat Smart, Get Moving was launched this year at ANC 2007 in Chicago. The program tracking period will end on April 14, 2008 and prize winners will be recognized at ANC 2008 in Philadelphia, PA.

Eat Smart, Get Moving nutrition goals are based on recommended intakes of the "Food Groups to Encourage" included in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, The goals for each phase of the program begin with levels indicated in national consumption data and gradually increase to help you meet the recommended number of servings from each of these food groups by the end of the program. Please note that the recommendations and program goals are designed for the needs of an average, healthy Americans.
"Food Groups to Encourage" is a term used in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to refer to fat-free or low-fat milk and dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Foods from these groups have important health benefits for most Americans. According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, those who eat more generous amounts of these foods as part of a healthful diet are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases than those who do not consume recommended amounts. Although each of these food groups may have a different relationship with disease outcomes, adequate intake from all of these food groups contributes to overall health.
These food groups also contain beneficial amounts of nutrients of concern—vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and dietary fiber-- as identified in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines. Most adults currently do not get enough of these nutrients or enough servings of dairy, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
To help control calories, when increasing your intake of these fat-free or low-fat milk and milk product fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, it is important to decrease your intake of less-nutrient-dense.
